Peter grew up as a naturalist exploring the woods and pasture around his family's small farm in the Driftless Region of Northern Iowa. Peter enjoys trail running, rock climbing, kayaking, skiing, and good food, so working to keep healthy forests, rivers, and pastures is crucial to his way of life. Peter attended Luther College to study biology, Spanish, and environmental ethics. Interests in community, cooking, and mountains took him to Holden Village in the Cascade Mountains of Washington. He then moved across the country to Maine, where he dived into sustainable farming and food system activism, working on organic farms and in restaurant kitchens, and opening a sourdough bakery. Peter noticed the huge impact of the food system in the environment, and the contention between food production and conservation efforts. Peter is excited to bring his experiences to the classroom, facilitating conversation, storytelling, and cross-pollinating between issues of ecology, stewardship, food and recreation.
