Stefan Anderson, Head of School    
M.S. in Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
B.A. in Physics, St. Olaf College
 
Prior to joining Conserve School, Stefan served as the Dean of Studies and Upper School Technology Director for Breck School in Minneapolis. Before moving into administration, Stefan taught high school mathematics courses ranging from traditional courses like AP Calculus BC to project-based courses like Fractals in Science and Up, Up, and Away–The History of Flight. He also developed science curricula for the Minnesota Department of Education and the College Board. Still a hands-on science teacher at heart, Stefan enjoys educating, entertaining, and sometimes startling students with impromptu science demonstrations. Stefan’s love for the outdoors and passion for integrated learning come together at Conserve School. Phil DeLong, Director of Admissions and Director of Residential Life    
B.A. in History, Accounting, and Secondary Education, Walsh University 
 
Before joining the Conserve School staff, Phil was director at Camp Gray in Wisconsin for 14 years. He began his career as a high school history teacher and has also taught leadership skills in schools and camps. He is a certified coach with a background in exercise science. An athlete and fitness enthusiast, Phil spends much of his time outdoors, skiing, backpacking, canoeing, snowshoeing, and mountain biking. A competitive Nordic ski racer, he frequently places in marathons and half-marathons. He eagerly awaits the return of snow each autumn.
Cathy Palmer, Director of Outdoor Programs and Director of Residential Life    
B.S. in Biology and Outdoor Education, Northland College
 
Cathy has a passion for the outdoors and wilderness experiences and a keen desire to ignite this passion in others. A camp director for over 25 years, Cathy worked as Environmental Education Director and Camp Director for Milwaukee-area residential YMCA camps prior to joining Conserve School. Cathy has served in leadership capacities in the American Camp Association on both the state and national level and has been honored by this organization with several awards for outstanding leadership and service. She is frequently called upon by the ACA to evaluate programs around the Midwest. Her interests include wilderness canoeing, cross country skiing, and hiking with her dogs Isabelle and Lucy. Cathy also creates jewelry and textile art and enjoys sharing these talents with students. She also dabbles in theater and loves to work with students on performances and productions.
Mary Anna Thornton, Assistant Head of School

B.A., English Literature and Language, University of Dallas
 
Mary Anna was Assistant Head of Quest Academy in Chicago prior to joining Conserve School. She has taught English, history, research methods, and information literacy in K-12 schools and sociology, anthropology, and psychology at community colleges. Mary Anna enjoys continuing to learn about education and leadership and in support of this habit has been awarded several fellowships and grants from organizations including the Fulbright Program and the National Association of Independent Schools. Most recently, Mary Anna has pursued professional development in educational technology, earning her Master of Arts in Educational Technology in August 2011 from Michigan State University. In her free time, Mary Anna enjoys tending the school garden, playing racket sports, painting and drawing, and playing the flute. Visit Mary Anna's Conserve School website.
